White House claims ignorance as its defense

Regarding security for our diplomats in Libya, VP Biden said last night:
"We weren't told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there."
If by "we" he meant his administration, that statement is just plain false.  So, today, the White House came to Biden's defense by claiming that it was just Obama and Biden who were ignorant of the security requests.  Foreign Policy's The Cable reports:
Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable. [Emph. added]
Take away Biden's smirking and what he is claiming is the Sgt. Schultz defense: "I know nothing!"
