The zero-tolerance war on young children who innocently bring something that looks like a gun to school is pathological bordering on mental abuse.

Such extreme over-reactions cannot be explained by logic.  We have discussed this issue before in the context of Yale banning the use of toy guns in a university play.  These all appear to be examples of 'sympathetic magic.'  Read more here.
