With a $208 million deficit, the City of Los Angeles needs to cut 1,000 or even 1,500 jobs or else look into "the possibility of municipal bankruptcy." They are even considering layoffs of police and firefighters. In the face of this crisis, LA Councilman Rosendahl (pictured) has announced his budget priority:Councilman Bill Rosendahl vowed to protect the city's calligraphers, the handful of artists who design ornate proclamations that elected officials hand out to constituents.In a separate response to the fiscal crisis, LA's unions are willing to accept layoffs provided that one condition is met:
"Whatever we need to do to preserve it, I want to do," he said

If you're going to deal with a $208 million deficit, you've got to cut a few things.
There are a lot of art grants that are going to be affected, and a lot of artists - some of whom actually do good work - are going to have to bite the bullet.
Mr Rosendahl might consider outsourcing the calligraphy to people who aren't full-time employees.
I suspect that there's more than a little fat in L.A.'s budget, and $208 million out of $7 billion ($7000 million) isn't a huge amount
