The Clarion Ledger reports on the guilty plea

Floyd Corkins II, 28, acknowledged in a plea agreement that he intended to kill as many people as possible during the August shooting at the Family Research Council. [Emph. added]

How did he come to the idea of killing people at the Family Research Council?

In his plea agreement, Corkins acknowledged he identified the Council as "an anti-gay organization" by visiting Southern Poverty [Law Center]'s website.[Emph. added]

 The SPLC doesn't just attack supporters of traditional marriage.  It also has labeled the Tea Party movement as racist.  The SPLC writes:

Now, there is new evidence that race is playing a part in the Tea Party movement as well, even as it begins to claim some real political power.

The SPLC lent support to the absurd claim that opposition to nationalized health insurance was based on Obama's race.

The SPLC also brands those who believe that immigration laws should be obeyed as "nativist extremists."

The SPLC cannot be blamed for Corkins' homicidal intentions.  The hate that it indiscriminately spews does, however, encourage it.  It is not clear whether the SPLC was ever a legitimate civil rights organization.  It certainly isn't now.

Left-wing racism: Marion Barry doubles down on "dirty" Asians

Earlier this month, District of Columbia city Councilman Marion Barry said that Asian businesses have to go:

We got to do something about these Asians coming in, opening up businesses or dirty shops. They ought to go. I'll just say that right now. We need African-American business people to be able to take their place.

Reason TV followed up with an interview in which former Mayor Barry explained:

There is a cultural difference between a number of ethnic groups, whether it is Hispanics, whether it is Asians, whether it's White people. There is a cultural difference because of our socialization, because of segregation, discrimination, all this adds to it, and it affects every aspect of our life.

He went on to explain that he brought the subject up because Asians own "95 percent" of the carry-out food shops are "owned or managed by Asians."

Has a second front opened in the war for freedom?

Pres. Obama's attempt to use Obamacare to crush religious freedom is provoking a backlash even in San Francisco where Christians organized a massive rally on Friday against Obamacare's mandates (click to enlarge):

Up until now, the TEA party, a secular group, has been the central force defending freedom against Obama's governmental power grabs. If this rally is an indication, religious groups may form a second front in this war for freedom.

Since Christianity values charity, many Christians have supported Democrats and their government welfare state. Obama has demonstrated however the danger in this ill-conceived alliance. The massive power of a Federal welfare state is a threat to religion and religious values. It is not just the outrage of the government requiring Catholics to pay for abortifacients and the possibility that this may force the nationwide network of Catholic charity hospitals to close. Obama's stated goal of giving old people aspirins instead of medical care is also a clear violation of Christian conscience:

This rally took place at Noon on Friday at the Federal Building in San Francisco. Although some media reported the crowd size at 500, Larry from SF estimates the attendance at 1,000. This rally was part of a nationally organized Stand Up for Religious Freedom protests.

One of the groups represented at the rally was Couples for Christ, a Catholic organization, with a newly discovered mission to oppose Obama:

There was a large religious contingent at the last San Francisco TEA party protest against Obama in San Francisco (story and photos). This rally takes that opposition to a new and higher level. One can hope that this represents an awakening on the part of Churches to the idea that their survival depends not just on changing the language of one mandate among many in the Obamacare regulations but recognizing what the founding fathers understood: our government should not have had to power to make such mandates in the first place.

I am pro-free speech. If MSNBC or DailyKos or whoever wants to spew hate, that is their right. The left, however, also uses the tactic of targeted boycotts to suppress speech and, on Sunday, they succeeded in getting Carbonite and ProFlowers to suspend their advertising on Rush Limbaugh's radio show. They both continue to advertise on left-wing outlets whose hate-speech far exceeds Limbaugh's joke at the expense of the 31-year political advocate who wants other people to pay for her to have sex. As Prof. Jacobson wrote (before the ProFlowers announcement):

We need to send a message that we will not acquiesce in the new left-wing tactic of trying to force conservatives off the air by targeting advertisers.

Carbonite is the place to start.

I will not buy from either company in the future.

Updating the Declaration's list of grievances

The US revolution was inspired by England's abuse of power and the US Declaration of Independence contains a list of such grievances. How do they compare with the abuses of power by the current Federal government and by Pres. Obama's administration in particular?

Original: "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance."

Update: Considering Obamacare and new punitive "environmental" regulations, the original text holds today.

Original: "For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:"

That does lead to an interesting question. Does sexual frustration lead to liberal political views? Loneliness and sexual frustration do seem to be a factor in terrorism.

Court: Big Brother may track you

Remember when "warrantless" searches were considered a bad thing? In California, the left-wing Federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals says that that time has past. CNN reports:

Law enforcement officers may secretly place a GPS device on a person's car without seeking a warrant from a judge, according to a recent federal appeals court ruling in California.

The court specifically gave the OK to sneaking onto a driveway and placing the GPS device on your car. In a bit of class-ism, the ruling does not apply if you park your car in a garage: that would still require a warrant.

The Chief Justice of the Ninth Circuit, a Reagan appointee, dissented.

It seems reasonable to me that law enforcement should occasionally be allowed to track suspects with GPS but, because the potential for abuse of this is so great, such as the tracking of political opponents, court approval should be required.

What happens at a Tea Party Meeting?

They talk about the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and how it relates to what Pres. Obama is doing now. Here, in two parts, is a short (17 min.) video presentation by Leonard Stone given at a meeting of MyLiberty, the official Tea Party Patriot group of San Mateo County, California. The lecture explores the grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence, how those grievances influenced the writing of the Constitution, and how it relates to what Pres. Obama is doing now.

The first part of the video discusses the first two of the grievances in the Declaration, what motivated them, and how they are relevant today:

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

The differences between then and now are obvious. Obama is not the king of England, for example. However, the similarities, such as are playing out in Louisiana and Arizona, are also, as Mr. Stone makes plain, striking.

The second half of the lecture addresses the next four grievances:

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

The Founding Fathers experienced what it was like to live under an oppressive government and they clearly designed the US Constitution in response to those governmental abuses. This is why the Progressive Movement found the Constitution to be an obstacle and why we need to continue to defend the Constitution against today's progressives.

Obama ally: "I hate white people...."

In 2008, the New Black Panthers endorsed Obama for President. Here is the leader of Philadelphia's New Black Panthers:

Their support of Obama in 2008 does seem to have provided returns. Even though Shabazz and his cohorts lost by default a voter intimidation lawsuit, the Obama Justice department dropped the case before sentencing. It pays to have friends in high places.

China sentences American for industrial spying

China has tortured and sentenced to 8 years in prison a naturalized American citizen because he gather information on China's oil industry even though, according to the defense, most countries consider the same information to be public. The AP reports:

An American geologist held by Chinese state security agents who stubbed lit cigarettes on his arms was sentenced to eight years in prison Monday for gathering data on China's oil industry — a case that highlights the government's use of vague secrets laws to restrict business information. . . . .

Xue's sentence punctuates a case that has dragged on for more than two-and-a-half years and is likely to alarm foreign businesses unsure when normal business activities elsewhere might conflict with China's vague state security laws.

Chinese officials have wide authority to classify information as state secrets. Draft regulations released by the government in April said business secrets of major state companies qualify as state secrets. . . . .

Like IHS, many multinationals have come to rely on people like Xue to run their China operations. Another China-born foreign national, Australian Stern Hu who worked for the global mining firm Rio Tinto, was sentenced in March to 10 years for bribery and infringing trade secrets that dealt with iron ore sales to Chinese companies. . . . .

During Xue's closed-door trial, which ran over three dates last July and in December, the court document said he defended himself, arguing that the information he gathered "is data that the oil sector in countries around the world make public."

David Rowley, Xue's thesis adviser at University of Chicago and a geologist, said that the location and seismic and other data of oil wells is commonly available and could not compromise Chinese security since the government controls access.

In the communist tradition, courts do not exist to protect the rights of individuals. They exist to enforce the whims of the communist political leaders. The American left, with its talk of a "living constitution" that bends to their will, wants America's courts to more like Chinese ones.

A government and its subjects

If you are an American citizen, you probably have had to waste a lot of time shuffling around courthouses waiting for the lawyers to decide if you are suitable for jury duty.  In LA, that is changing slightly, as the Los Angeles Times reports:

With shrinking budgets, courts are under pressure to do more with less. Los Angeles County courthouses were summoning 55,000 people a week, at $15 a day each, until the economic crisis imposed more belt-tightening. The county is now making do with 45,000 summonses a week

Imagine how much more considerate of citizens the government would become if it had to obey the rules that apply to businesses and pay the prospective jurors the legal minimum wage.

Obama says kill?

After years of decrying Bush's policy of interrogating terrorists, Pres. Obama has promised to end "torture" and close gitmo. That means that there is little value in capturing top Al Qaeda operatives. So, according to the Washington Post, the decision appears to have been made to kill them instead. We won't get any useful intelligence from them that way but the advantage is that no one will be able to accuse Obama of torturing them.

Obama's don't-ask-don't-tell plan

Cynthia Yockey, at her Conservative Lesbian blog, explains Pres. Obama's game plan for "repealing" don't-ask-don't-tell in the military:

Obama does not play games he hasn’t rigged. The base he will never betray — the anti-gay black religious Left*, Muslims and illegal aliens — is comprised of groups that are nation-building: morality is just their cover story for destroying people who are not on board with making babies for them. ....

So I think Obama has rigged a crushing defeat for any attempt to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell,” and his homosexual patsies on the Left ... don’t see this betrayal coming. .... But this is classic Obama — make big promises and get homosexuals hopeful and gushing cash, then a few days or weeks later, crush them with actions that are the opposite of what was promised. Demonize the Right and repeat.

Bush era and gay rights

B. Daniel Blatt, of GayPatriot, reports:

I’ve been reviewing statistics on corporate policies toward gay employees and have been impressed to discover how quickly these private enterprises have responded to the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in American society. And the pace at which they offered benefits to same-sex domestic partners of employees did not slacken during the supposed dark days of the George W. Bush Era.

Indeed, the bellyaching of the gay left notwithstanding, the Bush Era was a Golden one for Gay Americans, thanks in large part to the greatness of the federal structure our framers designed–and to the freedom inherent in the American “experiment."

More suppression of dissent

Two unrelated items illustrate how the left prefers to deal with dissent:

1. Criticism of Islam is not allowed at Princeton or Columbia. As Human Events writes:

   Nonie Darwish, the executive director of Former Muslims United and author of Cruel And Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law, was scheduled to speak at Columbia and Princeton last week, but both events were canceled under pressure from Muslim groups on campus.
   
   Darwish, a soft-spoken ex-Muslim and daughter of an Islamic martyr, is a champion of the rights of women and non-Muslims in Islamic societies, and leader of the group Arabs for Israel. She had been planning to speak on “Sharia Law and Perspectives on Israel.” She is one of the few courageous voices who speak out against Islamic anti-Semitism and the oppression of women under Sharia.

   Prior to 9-11, the politically correct opinion would have been that women's rights were more important than religious sensibilities. Now, that has reversed, provided that the religion is Islam.
   


2. Global warmists claim to represent the consensus despite the thousands on scientist who are on record as disagreeing with them. In "Three Things You Absolutely Must Know About Climategate," Iain Murray reviews the e-mails surrounding the dismissal of a journal editor for disagreeing with the politically-connected global warmists:

   In 2005, Michael Mann said that there was a “fundamental problem w/ GRL now,” referring to the journal Geophysical Research Letters published by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), because “they have published far too many deeply flawed contrarian papers in the past year or so” and “it is probably best to do an end run around GRL now where possible.” Tom Wigley responded that “we could go through official AGU channels to get him [the editor of GRL] ousted” (1106322460). A few months later, the editor of GRL having left his post, Mann comments, “The GRL leak may have been plugged up now w/ new editorial leadership there” (1132094873).

Democrats attack their own patriotism

Remember when BusHitler's military commissions were shredding the constitution? That is now so last year, as CNN reports:

Two-thirds of Americans disagree with the Obama administration's decision to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed in a civilian court rather than a military court, according to a new national poll. ....

"The decision to bring Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in front of a civilian court is universally unpopular - even a majority of Democrats and liberals say that he should be tried by military authorities," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. [Emph. added]

It seems that Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) didn't get the memo: He is still claiming that anyone who skeptical of Obama's plan to try the Al Qaeda bigwigs in civilian court is "un-American."

Being president is above Obama's pay grade

The AFP reports on tonight's McCain-Obama forum:

Both candidates were quizzed for their views on same-sex marriage and abortion, Obama sidestepping when asked directly to give his view on when a baby began to enjoy human rights.

"I think that whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade," Obama said. [emphasis added.]

The problem with this answer, of course, is that the question is not theoretical: congressman and presidents have to make decisions about such issues every time, say, partial birth abortion comes up for a vote. Since Sen. Obama has voted in favor on partial birth abortion on more than one occasion, he does have a position on this issue. He just doesn't want to defend his position. He is a profile in cowardice.

Contrast Obama's answer with Sen. McCain's:

McCain, who is opposed to abortion, replied bluntly to the same question. "From the moment of conception," McCain said. "I will be a pro-life president and this presidency will have pro-life policies."

Sen. McCain's answer may not be scientifically sound but at least he is willing to state his position clearly.

Gitmo torture tactics revealed

The attorney for Gitmo inmate Salim Hamdah wants Hamdah's statements to interrogators excluded from his trial because of the "coercive tactics" used there by the US. As the Washington Post reports:

Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden who is accused in a terrorism conspiracy, told a military court that during questioning in 2002, a female interrogator "came close to me, she came very close, with her whole body towards me. I couldn't do anything. I was afraid of the soldiers."

"Did she touch your thigh?" asked Hamdan's attorney Charles Swift.

Hamdan's attorneys are seeking to persuade a judge to throw out incriminating statements he allegedly made to interrogators at the U.S. military prison here, arguing that they were obtained through coercive tactics.
